Dr. David Matheson, MD, FRCPC, Retired Physician, discusses the benefits of strength conditioning later in life.
Benefits of Strength Conditioning
When I began strength conditioning, I have to admit it was a bit of a push from my son who is a bit competitive, which is good.
And I think every once in a while everybody needs a little bit of a push. Sometimes you can do it on your own, sometimes it takes somebody else. But when I started to do strength conditioning, so about three years ago, I felt quite a bit better after about six weeks.
The first six weeks I can’t say that I really did, but after about six weeks, I felt better. I had a little bit more flexibility and I could feel already a difference in strength. It was too early to see changes but I have been able to now see changes in even just in the shape of the muscles, that makes it great.
I think how it helps me is feeling a bit more secure when I’m doing things around the house, particularly outside the house. You know, a litte bit of heavy things I do, gardening, weeding, that kind of thing, you get a lot more exercise and it’s not draining. It’s just one of those things you do, it’s not a problem.
Strength conditioning to me made quite a difference with respect to both how I was prepared to deal with the things that I was working on as well as some of the fun things. I noticed my tennis game was getting better when I started doing strength conditioning.
And I think it was mainly about the core and I had a little bit more ability to stabilize for a shot and to hit a little bit harder and that kind of thing, you know. I still find that that really made a difference to the tennis game.
What else did I find? I may have found sort of a confidence in the way I stand, an ability to stand a little bit more erect, and a little bit more upright. And you know, I do notice as I do get older the shoulders start to slump a wee bit and now I think I do stay a little bit more upright.
